Complete Educational Requirements ▾Obtain a Master's or Doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an ASHA-accredited program.

Complete Supervised Experience ▾Complete 1,260 hours of supervised postgraduate professional experience (Clinical Fellowship). If practicing in Idaho during this time, you must obtain a Provisional Permit.

Pass the Praxis Exam ▾Achieve a passing score of at least 162 on the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology exam (test code 5331).

Submit Fingerprints ▾Complete a fingerprint-based criminal history background check. Request a fingerprint card from the Board and return it directly to DOPL.

Submit Online Application ▾Create an account on the DOPL Online Services portal and submit the 'Speech-Language Pathologist Original License' application.

Request Official Documents ▾Request that official transcripts and Praxis scores be sent directly from the issuing authority to the Board office.

Requirements ▾
Idaho is a member of the ASLP Interstate Compact. SLPs from other compact member states can practice in Idaho through a compact privilege.

No, ASHA certification is not required, but the educational and experience requirements for Idaho licensure are substantially similar to ASHA's standards.
When does my Idaho SLP license expire?

Licenses expire annually on the licensee's birthdate. Note that Idaho is transitioning to a 2-year renewal cycle starting in 2026.
What are the continuing education (CE) requirements?

Licensees must complete 10 contact hours of CE annually (or 30 hours every 3 years). CE requirements are waived for the first three renewals after initial licensure.
Is there a fee holiday for SLP renewals?

Yes, as of January 1, 2026, DOPL has implemented a fee holiday, waiving renewal fees ($0) for the Speech, Hearing and Communication Services Board until further notice.
Can I practice while my application is pending?
▾
No. You must be duly licensed by the Board before engaging in the practice of speech-language pathology in Idaho.
