How to Apply
Verify Employment and Basic Training
▾
Kansas does not license or register dental assistants for basic duties. You must work under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist who is responsible for your training and conduct.
Complete Radiography Training (Optional but Recommended)
▾
While Kansas does not mandate specific radiography certification for dental assistants, most employers require competency. You may choose to take the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam.
Obtain CPR Certification
▾
If you intend to monitor nitrous oxide or perform expanded functions, you must maintain a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) or CPR certification.
Complete Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Course
▾
To monitor nitrous oxide, you must complete a Board-approved 16-hour course at a CODA-accredited program and be CPR certified.
Complete Supragingival Scaling Course
▾
To perform supragingival scaling, you must complete a Board-approved course of at least 90 hours, including laboratory and clinical competency assessments.
Dentist Reporting for Scaling
▾
If you perform supragingival scaling, your supervising dentist must report your name and practice location to the Kansas Dental Board within 30 days of you starting these duties.

Slow Downs
Missing Dentist Reporting
▾
The most common delay for expanded functions is the supervising dentist failing to file the required 'Report of a Supragingival Scaling Assistant' with the Board.
Non-Accredited Training
▾
Completing a course that is not CODA-accredited or Board-approved will result in the assistant being unable to legally perform expanded functions.
Expired CPR Certification
▾
Failure to maintain an active CPR/BLS card can legally bar an assistant from monitoring nitrous oxide.
